| Affidavit of Neighbors, Employers or those who worked with the Soldier (Affidavit of Mrs. D. L. Baumgarten, Niece of Bernard Pichel) |
| State of Ohio, Hamilton County, ss. On the 9th day of February 1886, before the undersigned authority within and for said County and State personally appeared, Mrs. D. L. Baumgarten, who, being duly sworn, states on oath that he first became acquainted witht he physical condition of Bernard Pichel after his return from Co. "C" 74th Regt. Pa. about April 1863 and found him to be suffering from disability or disease called Rheumatism and disease of the throat from which heknew him to continue to suffer each year up to about February 1886. The progress and symptoms of this disease is as follows; Affidavit was acquatined with Mr. Pichel and his family previous to his enlistment in the U S Service. At enlistment, he appeared hearty and she never heard him complain. On his return from the Army, he was quite ill with rheumatism, walked with great difficulty using a cane, being lame and feeble, unable to do any work, not even at his trade that of a cigar maker. When Mr. Pichel moved to Henderson, Ky., she lived in Evansville, Mo. and Mr. Pichel visited them frequently. Affidavit was in Rochester, NY and resded there during the time Mr. Pichel lived there. In 1877, when Mr. Pichel came to Cincinnati to live, Affidavit was living there and Mr. Pichel was still suffering his throat troubles seemed much worse, a hacking wheezing cough and from 1877 to date, she knows he has continued to suffer at times a little better, then worse on least exhause having frequent attacks of his rheumatism trouble, but his throat affliction did not seem to improve. That his means of knowing his condition is as folllows; that she is niece of Mr. Pichel and the family exchange visits and see each other frequently. *Transcription of Actual Document |
